The Uninvited Cat:
How to Deal with Unwelcome Cats on your Property.
Even if you do not have cats of your own, odds are that others in you neighborhood do. Some of these cats may venture into your yard from time to time, whether you welcome them or not. Some suggestions from the “Humane Society of the United States” are as follows: There are many categories of “free roaming “cats. Your approach to preventing unwelcome feline visitors depends on the category of cat you are dealing with.
*An owned cat (your neighbors) who is allowed outdoors unsupervised - probably the most common scenario in residential neighborhoods.
*A owned cat that has become lost.
*A previously owned cat that has been abandoned and no longer has a home.
*A “neighborhood” cat, one fed by several residents in the area but truly cared for by no one.
*A feral cat, an unsocialized cat who may be one or more generations removed from a home environment and may subsist in a colony.
It is also important that you familiarize yourself with the laws in your County/ City. Within the city limits of New Braunfels there is a restraint law for both Dogs and Cats. The definition in the Ordinances reads as follows. “Restraint” is defined as being secured by a leash or lead and under the control of a responsible person, OR confined in a yard that is enclosed by a secure, substantial fence. All domesticated animals must be kept under restraint at all times, even though they may be vaccinated and tagged. Any cat straying from its owner’s property shall be deemed a public nuisance and is subject to impoundment.
After you have identified the category of cat(s) you are dealing with and familiarized yourself with the local laws, the next recommendation for you is as follows:
*If owned by one of your neighbors your best approach is to speak to him or her about the problems that you are having with the pet. Try to persuade them to keep the cat indoors or otherwise safely confined.
*If the cat has appeared recently and you think it may be lost or abandoned you should contact you local Animal Shelter to check their lost reports. There may be a family worried about their cat and your call may be the one to reunite them.
* If the cat is feral there are a few options that you have. Sometimes there is someone in the area that is feeding the cats by putting food out for them daily. These people normally started by feeling sorry for the animals and the situation got out of hand. You can speak to this person if known and explain to them that you are willing to help them minimize the colony by humanely trapping. You can also contact your local Animal Control Agency, were they can advise you of humane ways to deter the felines from damaging your property. Excerpts from a Cat’s Daily Diary
Day 683 of my captivity: My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre dangling objects.
They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets.
Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength. The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape. In an attempt to disgust them, I once again regurgitated on the floor.
Day 683 1/2 I left my weekly threat to keep them in line, by dropping a dead mouse at their feet.
I had hoped that it would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly shows my level of commitment to my cause.
However, they merely made condescending comments about what a “good little hunter” I am. The audacity!
Day 684 There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight.
I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event.
However I could hear the noises and smell of food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of “allergies”.
I must learn what this means and to use this to my advantage.
Day 685 Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet while he was walking. I must try again tomorrow — but at the top of the stairs.
I am convinced that the other prisoners are all flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released and more then willing to return to this terrible confinement. He is obviously has problems.
The bird has got to be an informant. I observe him communicating with the guards regularly. I am certain he reports my every move. The captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe…….. For now…….
KITTENS
Spring is a time of beauty as flowers blossom leaves unfold and new signs of life emerge. But springtime’s stunning beauty conceals an ugly, tragic underside. Spring is also when thousands and thousands of kittens are born. More than 52,000 kittens will be born each and every day. From spring to summer, the population explosion peaks, and shelters start overflowing with cats and kittens. The fortunate ones will find loving and happy homes. Many more of these precious little ones will not, simply because there are not enough homes for all of them.
Kittens who don’t find a home will end up in animal shelters or out on the street, where life is difficult and dangerous. Some may be abandoned in a field or even thrown in a dumpster by people who didn’t want them in the first place and just do not care. Even the lucky ones that find their way to the shelters may face a bleak future. Shelters that are already short on space will have to make difficult decisions. If the kittens are sick or to young to eat on their own then euthanasia is probable.
Please spay or neuter you animals to help with this growing problem. The only way to help this problem is for everyone to work together in the effort to help the pet population.
